Dr. Paul Offit Fights against Disease

Dr. Paul Offit dedicated his career to immunization because he wanted to make a difference in the fight against disease. As a medical student, he first read about the tremendous loss of life caused throughout history by infectious diseases. He was inspired to study such diseases and made vaccination the concentration of his illustrious thirty-year career. Dr. Paul Offit holds the positions of Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to those duties, he also assumes the responsibility of the Maruice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Paul Offit has researched and published over 130 highly-regarded papers in journals of medicine and science about rotavirus-specific immune responses and specifically the safety of vaccination.

Dr. Paul Offit is the co-inventor of the rotvirus vaccine, a significant medical contribution which the CDC recommends for universal infant use. He was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Jonas Salk Medal from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology in recognition for this important achievement. He has also written numerous books about vaccination and was a member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Back in medical school, Dr. Offit was fascinated by what he read about powerful infections and made their study and prevention the cornerstone of his life’s work
