Vivek Kundra Brings Technology to Washington D.C. Schools

Just a few years ago, when funding for technology went into Washington D.C. public schools there was little accountability for a project failing and not enough advancement forward. One project had $25 million of taxpayer dollars spent to implement a human resources software program. Not only was the program unsuccessful but nobody was held responsible and then even more money was requested. The District and its schools needed a change and technology wiz Vivek Kundra was happy to take on the challenge.

When Vivek Kundra assumed the position of chief technology officer for the District he tackled the system, looking to implement a dynamic new technology infrastructure. He modernized the ways schools applied and approached technology, striving to make them 21st century campuses. Vivek Kundra spearheaded the inclusion of new equipment in schools throughout the District. He is credited with digitizing school personnel files which is an initiative which brought the city substantial cost-saving and compliance benefits. An electronic identification card system was put into operation which tracks students' participation in after school programs, libraries, and technology labs. This data provides valuable feedback to the schools and helps devise targeted future programs. Under his leadership, a million dollars was secured from such companies as Microsoft, Dell, and Intel. This funding was used to construct a state-of-the art technology classroom where he even had members of his own staff work and offer student demonstrations. Thanks to the oversight and vision of Vivek Kundra, the situation has been turned around and schools in the nation's capital have been on the receiving end of a smart and streamlined technology push. His efforts have helped close the gap between schools and the technology of the consumer world.
